Mercy
The sky opens, an exclamation
so blue that all I can do
is see it
and wonder
at its being:
Is it the ocean’s dream of itself, in flight?
Does it rise from us or does it rest? On us?
A blanket so light we do not know we are covered.
What it is to walk to the shops today
under such a tender immensity,
even the sorrow
that sits like a stone in my heart,
softens—a fist, unclenching.
